We drove 500 km on JAC JS6. We talk about impressions, fuel consumption and shortcomings
The JAC brand has been present on the domestic market for more than six months. During this time, the brand has firmly entrenched at least in the minds of Belarusian motorists. Then it's up to the small - to charm the consumer, because after the success of Geely, the dismissive attitude towards the "Chinese" becomes part of history. In the fall, we got acquainted with the JAC J7 liftback, and today we decided to test the JS6 crossover in action . So, does the “SUV” still feel good after 500 kilometers, as promised in advertising booklets? We answer in the review.
JAC related to Volkswagen ?
Instead of a preface, let's imagine a car that came to us for a test drive. And this is a mid-size JAC JS6 in the Luxury package. The price of this crossover is currently 98,200 rubles. A cheaper option is also available in the line: in Comfort equipment, it will cost 91,700 BYN.

The crossover is equipped with a one and a half liter turbocharged engine, traditional for the Chinese automobile industry. Its declared power is 174 hp. with., and the maximum torque is 280 Nm. The non-alternative motor is combined with the non-alternative transmission - the “robot” 6DCT.
In terms of overall dimensions, the JAC JS6 is exactly in the middle of the mid-size crossover class - sorry for the tautology. Compared to Chinese competitors (Chery Tiggo 7 Pro and Exeed LX), which, by the way, are on our market, it has one of the most elongated wheelbases - 2,720 mm.

There is another circumstance that makes JAC related to Volkswagen. The fact is that the two companies jointly developed the MIS modular platform, which uses fully independent suspensions, a transverse engine. Also, increased requirements for passive safety are presented here - it is not for nothing that the model received five stars in the C-NCAP rating.
Taking into account the maximum configuration of Luxury, a logical question arises: what set will the buyer get for 98,200 BYN (or $33,380 at the current exchange rate)? First of all, a complete package of security systems: "pillows" for the driver, front passenger, side and curtain type; child seat mounts Isofix, ABS, ESC, brake booster and hill descent assistance system, as well as parking sensors, blind spot sensors and a circular camera.
Automatic power windows, coupled with pinch protection and other options make the JAC JS6 the perfect family car. Well, what about without a panoramic roof - one of the favorite "gadgets" for kids!
From what an experienced driver will like, there are fully LED optics, heated front seats, windshield and side mirrors.
It was on such a “stuffed” JAC JS6 that we went to conduct a test drive. The goal is to drive as much as possible on one gas station and learn about the real fuel consumption over a long distance. We pick up the car at the JAC dealership on Kupriyanov Street, and hit the road!
Not without nuances that give out a “Chinese” in it
While the odometer counts down every kilometer that we have overcome, impressions of the appearance of the crossover rush through my head. If the J7 liftback, the first official representative of the brand in Belarus, was considered separately from the entire model line, then the JS4 and JS6 SUVs are stylistically very well matched one to one.
In the center of the recognizable “facade” of the JAC JS6 is a three-sector optics, as well as (on both sides of the false radiator grille) LED headlights.
The silhouette consists mainly of smooth lines, which are designed to satisfy the tastes of all buyers. At the same time, calling the appearance of a crossover spineless would be a big mistake. No wonder: now brand designers are working together with marketers, so it is unlikely that any details will annoy the consumer in the exterior.
In the cabin, everything is in Chinese ... No matter how ambiguous these words sound, the author does not put negativity into them. For some reason, the interior of Chinese automakers is insanely recognizable. Previously, it was associated with strange decisions, now it is not. There were no questions about ergonomics during a long test drive.
The climate control buttons are touch-sensitive, but they are at hand - right after the gearbox washer. Multifunction steering wheel, seat adjustment unit, power windows — everything is in its place. In a word, convenient.
There are a number of features that give out "Chinese" in JAC JS6 . For example, the profile of the seat back is very successful, but the length of the seat cushion is too small. Even with a height of 175 cm, the feeling that the knees are hanging in the air does not leave. The seat itself, by the way, is adjustable in height only for the driver - the front passenger does not have such an opportunity.
Due to the long wheelbase, travelers on the second row are guaranteed not to complain about the lack of space and even the seat cushion - here it seems slightly longer. In the maximum configuration for the rear row, climate control ducts are removed.
The gear selector washer rotates 360 degrees, which you get used to right away. Once - and with one awkward movement of the hand, the driver risks putting the car on P (parking). Fortunately, the car is equipped with a system that prevents you from overshooting a gear while the JS6 is in motion.
The electronic dashboard, combined with a multimedia screen, looks stylish. There is only one thing but ... Due to the fact that the “tidy” is not recessed into the dashboard and does not have a “visor”, on a sunny day the glare will torture the driver.
Among the features of the model, one can write down the strange functioning of the multimedia system. By itself, the "firmware" is working, but it does not feel 100% modified. It seems that the translation is not lame, although capital letters are not present in all sections of the menu. Also, for example, when adjusting the climate control settings, the screen does not display the temperature change or the current value.
Subjectively: the display is slightly different from a tablet with the Android operating system. Most of the associations are caused by the notification curtain. One to one!
The volume of the luggage compartment in the JAC JS6 is 490 liters, which is not so much, but it is compensated by additional niches and pockets on the sides. If you need to carry bulky cargo, you can fold the second row of seats, so that the capacity will increase to 1,080 liters.
By the way, the Chinese crossover does not occupy practicality: roomy niches, shelves and pockets for small things are scattered throughout the cabin.
A plastic casing at the bottom of the doors reliably protects the threshold from dirt. It is noteworthy that the designers did not forget about removing moisture from the cavity of the element by adding drainage holes.
We drove 500 km - what is the real consumption of the crossover?
Let's say a few words about the dynamics of the car. More precisely, the absence of such. We did not find enthusiasm in the J7 liftback with a variator, which we then attributed to the factory settings. The JS6 crossover with a robotic transmission, unfortunately, also cannot boast of valiant agility.
In preparation for overtaking "passport" 174 liters. With. do not inspire confidence. Although in the same 177-horsepower Geely Coolray (135 kg lighter than JS6) the sensations are completely different - the Belarusian-Chinese SUV is noticeably more dynamic.
However, the position for JAC corrects the sport mode of the gearbox and engine. The steering wheel is heavy, and the settings hide extra split seconds at the thoughtful turbo lag before the JAC JS6 jerk . True, there is no physical switch - you need to re-access the multimedia display and call the notification curtain.
We must admit that we got the car for a test drive when the dashboard displayed an impressive consumption of 13.4 liters of gasoline. The numbers were rather surprising, which is why the trip turned into an unobtrusive quest: to go purely at high speed, without forcing the engine and gearbox. At this rate of movement, by the end of our route, the average consumption values were reduced to 8.6 liters of AI-95. In general, a good result for the combined cycle and a segment of 500 km!
The mention of the joint development of the MIS modular platform by JAC and Volkswagen at the beginning of the material was not without reason. Fully independent suspension doesn't feel that way. It is clearly harsh - like a downed “hodovka” of VAG cars. You can’t call it furious, but before each hole you want to slow down if you can’t go around.

Summarizing the impressions of the JAC JS6 , it is worth noting that after 500 kilometers driving a crossover, you begin to forgive him a lot. Seat cushion not long enough? Put on the cruise control and let your feet rest. Not enough dynamics - think about whether you really want to drive this car and how this will affect fuel costs.
The crossover feels like a strong and well-thought-out product for people who are married and accomplished: to take their children to school, and themselves to work. The nuances of multimedia or outstanding "Chinese" features are compensated by rich equipment, which, admittedly, provides the necessary level of comfort even at a long distance.
