Nissan Patrol (Y61) on a lift.

Nissan Patrol (Y61) on a lift. “Axles and frame are many times stronger than other SUVs”

Let frame SUVs gradually become a part of history and stop leaving the assembly line, lovers of true "all-terrain vehicles" arrange a real hunt for both surviving cars and individual components of these legendary cars. Yes Yes! Land Cruiser, Patrol and Pajero are the holy trinity of off-road legends. Today we will tell you about Nikita, the owner of a Nissan Patrol with a 4.2-liter diesel engine. We will find out why a man needs such an aggregate, what is his romance, how to restore and maintain a model. And, of course, let's mix dirt - wasn't Patrol born for this?

“Axles and frame are many times stronger than other SUVs”

Minsker Nikita has been passionate about SUVs for many years. His very first car was the 1984 Nissan Patrol.

- At that time, I just wanted a jeep, I stumbled upon the Patrol by accident. There was also a 3.2-liter diesel engine. I fell in love with the model very much, so for all subsequent years I chose exclusively “Patrols” (this is how “jeep drivers” call the Nissan Patrol. - Approx. Aut.). I tried another SUV once, but I didn't like it.

Nissan Patrol on the lift. “Weighs almost 3 tons, and tears up to a hundred in 6.6 seconds”

“Perhaps the Patrol is somewhat inferior to other all-terrain vehicles, but the safety margin of the model is astronomical, so the car allows you to do whatever your heart desires with it. I have owned the current Nissan Patrol (Y61) for two years, and before that, my friend operated it for about four years.

He replaced his own in the back of the Y60, which he restored for a long time, with a more recent modification of 2004.

Mitsubishi Pajero doesn't break down? Checked on the lift SUV with a mileage of 240 thousand km

- In the jeeper environment, many believe that the Nissan Patrol does not go. At the same time, everyone praises his car as best he can! Jeep Cherokee owners hate the Toyota Land Cruiser. The owners of the "Kruzaks" treat the "Patrols" with disdain. And so on in a circle, - Nikita grins. “Nevertheless, if we compare the Patrol with the Land Cruiser, the Nissan has much stronger bridges and a frame, and the engine is more reliable. There have been many cases when large wheels were put on the LC, because of which the frame in the area of the steering gear simply tore.

Toyota Land Cruiser (J200) on a lift. "Chronic disease - braking system"

- Overpaying for the Toyota brand is pointless. Nissan has never invested in Patrol advertising and has not positioned the model as a business class, unlike the Land Cruiser.

Back in 1987, Patrol won the Paris-Dakar rally. The model is still produced to this day without significant changes; moreover, it is one of the official vehicles of the UN. Therefore, the manufacturer has its regular customers - the UN and the armies of the world, as well as the main market in the United Arab Emirates.

“Even works on a mixture of oil and gasoline!”

The car of our hero belongs to the second restyling of the fifth generation Nissan Patrol. The body index is Y61, with this number the car was produced from 1997 to 2010. The manufacturer installed a three-liter turbodiesel with 158 hp in the SUV. with., however, our hero decided to replace it with another power unit.

- Now there is a Nissan TD42 engine here. It was installed in the "Patrol" until 1997, and was also used in the Nissan Safari - the Japanese version of the Patrol. This is a six-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine. The timing drive is gear type, the head and block are cast iron. According to the passport, there are only 116 "horses". For all the time I only changed the oil.

I traded the new LR Defender for a 26-year-old Toyota Land Cruiser 90. Rides and kicks!

- In the engine of electronics, only oil pressure and temperature sensors. Even the high-pressure fuel pump is completely mechanical, that is, if something suddenly happens to the generator on the road, only the light will disappear from the car and the dashboard will stop working. The movement can still be continued, it will be possible to start from a tugboat.

— Transmission type part-time. The front-wheel drive is connected rigidly directly from the transfer case. The design is quite reliable due to its simplicity and the absence of any differentials. In the rear axle forced vacuum differential lock (factory). There are a number of downshifts.

- There are wheel couplings (hubs) on the front axle: when the front drive is turned off, only the front wheels spin, and there is no torque on the front cardan and axle, which helps to reduce fuel consumption and extend the life of the units.

— Why did you decide to replace the original engine?

- I was not satisfied with the ZD30. I have been using Patrols all my life and I know the weak points of this unit. The designers in it have done such a thing ... They put balance shafts for some reason. It's actually more of a Renault motor than a Nissan. Although some people achieve results from ZD30.

"There are no hidden cavities - there is nothing to rust." How did mountains, swamps and rivers affect the body of the Land Rover Defender?

- Therefore, instead of a native three-liter diesel engine, a donor with low mileage (90-95 thousand km) was bought, and immediately with a gearbox, razdatka and universal joints. Now the engine mileage is about 160 thousand kilometers - consider that it has just been run-in.

— The funny thing is that this engine eats literally any fuel! You can pour anything that burns. As the Russian blogger Akademik said, “the main thing is that it be thinner than sealing wax, but at the same time it burns a little better than water.” It's true!

There was a case in the past Nissan Patrol with SD33 (the "forefather" of the 4.2-liter engine). Then I ran out of diesel fuel in the village. I went to the tractor drivers and local drivers to look for diesel fuel - no one has it! Apparently, those who leaked have already sold, while others did not have a surplus.

In general, without thinking twice, my friend and I decided to use oil with gasoline - it had already been diluted for an old Soviet motorcycle, which is refueled according to the chainsaw principle with a mixture of these liquids. Refueled, and ... "Patrol" went! I have no idea what to do with this engine to destroy it. Initially, it was generally developed for motor boats, and later Nissan engineers redesigned it for cars.

- The car itself, by the way, is also well preserved: before my friend, it stood in a dry garage for seven years. The frame did not rot, because we realized it in time. About 80 kg of cannon fat was used to process this element near the body: it was poured into all hidden cavities in boiling form. They threw away three sets of clothes,” the owner laughs.

- The suspension was almost not improved in any way: the springs were set higher and spacers were added - the so-called body lift. They raised it so that there was space between the suspension and the body, plus everything is easier to wash the bottom after the “rides”.

“ Patrol even acted in films - they paid $ 100 a day”

— Nissan Patrol I use as a car for every day. On small cars, I already feel uncomfortable. On the road, it behaves as standard, no better and no worse than an ordinary passenger car. Of course, you won’t drive fast on it: you won’t accelerate to 180 km / h with two axles. Although this is possible, it will simply become scary from how the dependent suspension behaves at such a speed!

- If I had a desire to drive an SUV, I would place a 5.7 Hemi under the hood. Consumption will not increase much. Now the car consumes about 12 liters of diesel fuel in the city, and not much less on the highway - about 10-11 liters. True, if you put big wheels, the level of fuel consumption will increase.

Now, by the way, ordinary winter tires are installed, and not A / T or M / T, as is often the case with jeepers. While it's cold, you need to drive in a winter one so as not to arrange impromptu club meetings in a ditch.

- In recent years, I have been riding in the forest or going on vacation. Prior to this, the Nissan Patrol (Y60), which did not even have a salon - only bare metal, drowned up to the very dashboard. Now I'm tired, tired of being waist-deep in water. I didn’t participate professionally in trophy raids, I tried it a couple of times - and that’s it.

- Even on the set I managed to visit my "sixty-first". All Russian films about Chechnya are shot in quarries near Mikashevichy. There are two quarries there: in the granite one they make a movie about the Caucasus, in the sandy one - about Syria.

- It turns out that Nissan Patrol gave you the opportunity to earn extra money ... A profitable investment?

- Yes exactly. My friend is a stuntman, and somehow he invited me to take part in the filming. I was paid 100 dollars a day, provided with housing and refueled my Patrol. It was interesting! Yes, and there is something to remember.

Now Nikita has put Nissan Patrol (Y61) up for sale. For a 19-year-old SUV, a man asks ... $ 18,000!

On the lift

Since the 4.2-liter Patrol has a huge reliability resource, checking on a lift is an optional procedure, but we did not make an exception for the SUV. Diagnostic inspection was arranged by Tony Motors specialists.

- What is there to check? - the master said at once. — This is a crazy simple and reliable car. Nothing to even break. Usually, the owners themselves know about all the nuances of the car, because only “fanatics” buy such cars.

“The bottom is covered with a thick layer of anti-corrosion compound (cannon fat), and before processing, we sandblasted and galvanized the metal,” the owner clarifies.

— No through holes were found in the body, — the master comments. - The main components and assemblies are dry - without traces of leakage.

After inspecting the SUV on a lift, the experts voiced their recommendations: replace the right wheel bearing, as well as the rear and front brake pads.
